Betsy Dillard Stroud

Betsy Dillard Stroud rides the turbulent steeds of painting and writing. A born Virginian, Stroud began painting at the age of eight when an insightful uncle gave her a set of oils and suggested a tutor.  Stroud is a signature member and Dolphin Fellow of the American Watercolor Society in New York and a signature member of the National Watercolor Society in California, the Rocky Mountain Watermedia Honor Society in Colorado, and a Royal Scorpion and life Member of the Arizona Watercolor Society. She is a former President of the Southwestern Watercolor Society. A nationally acclaimed and award winning artist, Stroud is also a former art historian who received her M. A. from the University of Virginia.  She had just completed all course work and her orals in art history for the doctorate when she wrote her first book, a memoir about her father titled: Coming Hither- Going Hence, which radically altered the course of her life.  Through the book she met and married Ethan Stroud, moved to Dallas, and became a full time artist and writer. Though her marriage did not last, her work thrived and continues to express her eastern upbringing, her art historical back-ground and the colors and textures of the west and southwest.

In November, 2007, Betsy Dillard Stroud was one of 28 artists from the United States who was invited to exhibit in Nanjing, China in the First International Exhibition of Watermedia Masters. Her paintings are in hundreds of collections all over the United States and are in international collections in Japan, England, Canada, Australia, and the Bahamas.  Stroud was also on the Board of Directors of the American Watercolor Society (2005-2006.)  She is represented by Californiawatercolorists.com.

Stroud is the author of Painting from the Inside Out (North Light, 2002) and a Dutch edition of her book was published in Holland in 2005.  The author of three art books, her most recent book is Watercolor Masters and Legends, Northlight 2016. She also was one of three writers who wrote the Book: Joseph Raffael: Moving Toward the Light.  Her section was an artist to artist (Betsy and Joseph) interview.  Stroud has adjudicated over sixty eight international, national, regional, and state exhibitions.  In 2017, she was the Abstract/Experimental juror for the Artists Magazine International Competition.   Since 1987, she has written for many art magazines, including American Artist, The Artist’s Magazine, Watercolor Magic, (now Watercolor Artist) and Southwest Art. From 1998-2003, she served as Associate Editor of  North America for International Art Magazine  She has also taught workshops and lectured throughout the United States for thirty years.  She is now also teaching video online workshops for Artists Network University and Artist Network Television. Stroud is a former President and member of Park Central Toastmasters in Phoenix, and has attained the Advanced Toastmaster Silver and Competent Leader Status.

“As a spontaneous, creative and intuitive painter, who works both transparently and opaquely, and as a painter who works both abstractly and realistically, I need a stable of superior performing products and paints with different viscosities and abilities. Who gives me that, Holbein of course! Without a doubt, Holbein’s products more than satisfy my expectations, and then, presto, they come up with something else that stimulates and fulfills my urgent desire to explore other experimental ways of expression. In whatever medium I work with, Holbein fits the bill for both basic needs and idiosyncratic whims. Holbein is the best!” -Betsy Dillard Stroud
